Board Masters is NAM’s signature training program designed to strengthen the leadership and effectiveness of nonprofit boards. Whether you're a new board member, an executive director seeking solid board relations, or someone curious about board service, Board Masters equips you with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to lead with purpose.

Grounded in the Guidelines & Principles for Nonprofit Excellence, this training covers the core responsibilities of a board of directors – including defining mission, setting strategic direction, ensuring financial oversight, and supporting the executive director. It also explores how boards can assess their own effectiveness in serving the public interest.

This training is a great fit if:

  • You serve on a nonprofit board or are considering joining one

  • You want to help your board operate more effectively

  • You feel disengaged or untapped in your current board role

  • You’re not sure if your board is covering all its responsibilities

  • You're an executive director seeking ways to strengthen your board’s performance

This framework grounds the purpose of almost any nonprofit board:

  1. Determining the mission
  2. Establishing the vision and strategic direction
  3. Monitoring programs and service delivery
  4. Assuring legal and bylaws compliance
  5. Overseeing the organization’s finances and protecting its assets
  6. Fundraising
  7. Community relations
  8. Selecting, supporting, and evaluating the executive director
  9. Building the competency of the board

Attending a Board Masters training will help you make the most of these resources, but we encourage you to utilize them to benefit your organization's board regardless.
