Organization Overview

Fueled by Our Mission

Established in 2006, Sheltering Tree is a thriving 501(c)(3) organization tackling an urgent issue: the housing crisis for adults with developmental disabilities (DD). Sheltering Tree builds and operates affordable apartment communities for adults with DD, launching them toward maximum independence, productive and fulfilling lives, and the opportunity to belong and contribute to the greater community in which they live.

Driven by Our Values

At Sheltering Tree, we prioritize our organizational values of safety, affordability,
community, and self-determination in all our endeavors. For eighteen years, we have
been successfully planning, building, and operating affordable apartment
communities.

By adhering to our core values and addressing the critical need for affordable
housing, Sheltering Tree continues to make a profound impact on the lives of adults with developmental disabilities.

Transforming the Future

Current and Upcoming Developments:
• Current Locations: In Bellevue, Benson, and Papillion, we provide 76 affordable apartment units occupied by adults with DD.
• Elkhorn Project: Our next development is a $15.9 million apartment community, consisting of two twenty-four-unit buildings. This project is scheduled for occupancy in the spring of 2026. Future tenants have already been identified for the Elkhorn-Purple Martin location, and once occupied, Sheltering Tree will manage a total of 120 affordable apartments.

We maintain a waiting list of over 270 individuals with DD who are in need of affordable housing, highlighting the significant demand.
