BOARD MASTERS
OVERVIEW
Nonprofit boards need strong skills and a thorough understanding of their role to serve effectively. In this interactive series, we cover the most important aspects of board governance. Board Masters was created for current and potential board members who want to learn how to better serve nonprofit organizations, regardless of if they are veteran board members with years of experience or are new to board service. At the end of this training, you will be able to describe how effective boards function, tackle the essential tasks of nonprofit board members, and create a plan of action to address opportunities to improve.
YOU'LL LEARN
- What it means to be legally and socially accountable for your organization
- Principles of sound financial oversight
- The board’s role in fundraising
- The role of the board as "employer”
- Board conduct and how to develop a well-rounded, effective board of directors
FRAMEWORK
The session is organized around the nine responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors:
- Determining the mission
- Establishing the vision and strategic direction
- Monitoring programs and service delivery
- Assuring legal and bylaws compliance
- Overseeing the organization’s finances and protecting its assets
- Fundraising
- Community relations
- Selecting, supporting, and evaluating the executive director
- Building the competency of the board
AUDIENCE
Board Masters is intended for current and potential board members who:
- Want to better understand the role of a nonprofit board
- Want to be a better board member.
- Want to learn about nonprofit governance
- Wonder whether their board is fulfilling its role
- Despite their passion for the organization, are feeling disengaged and/or untapped as a board member
Board Masters is suitable for organizations big and small, regardless of mission focus. To get the maximum benefit of this training, we strongly encourage at least one board member and one senior-level staff member attend together.

Matt Martin, Director of Programs at Nonprofit Association of the Midlands
Matt Martin has spent 30 years in the nonprofit community, focusing on issues as international as nuclear weapons nonproliferation and as local as city transportation.
Throughout his career, Matt has engaged a wide range of audiences, from national policymakers and local civic groups to community college students and international media. In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his family, playing music, building furniture, and riding his bike.
