Event Details

The 2024 Fall Nonprofit Learning Series focuses on how we design for deeper learning

Our goal is to elevate effective and inclusive adult learning practices in the nonprofit and public sectors so the people who work on behalf of our communities have the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to thrive, and the people served by nonprofits and the public sector live with joy and liberation.

The Design for Deeper Learning Annual Series features learning and development experts who share the latest research and practices in adult learning, behavioral science, and program design. The Series is moderated by Nancy Bacon, a teacher, instructional designer, and learning strategist who has worked for over 25 years in the nonprofit sector.

All sessions take place from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Pacific | 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm Eastern

Talking to the Elephant: Designing Learning for Behavior Change
With Julie Dirksen

As a learning designer, what do you do when people know they need to wear their safety glasses, or add to their retirement savings, or update their client records, or finish their compliance training, or submit their expense reports on time, but they still aren’t doing it?

This session will explore how to design with principles and models from behavioral science. We will examine behavior change from a number of different angles, using techniques from the fields of neuroscience, behavioral economics, behavioral psychology, persuasive technology, and user experience design.

  • Help you diagnose the root causes for difficult behavior change challenges.
  • Map solutions using comprehensive research-based models.
  • Redesign learning materials to be more effective at motivating sustainable behavior change
